Winter 2007-08 Season

Since Burke Basketball is a non-profit organization, we depend heavily upon our families to provide volunteer services to keep us successful! In recent years, we are finding it more difficult to recruit new volunteers, and as some of our older families leave the organization, we must have a resurgence of new volunteers to keep the organization running!

As a result, we have a new Volunteer Policy this year. We are requiring all families to either volunteer or pay a $25 family opt-out fee during registration.

Since Referees receive payment for their efforts, we do not consider this a volunteer position. We still encourage new people to become involved in our Referee program, during which we provide basic referee training and real-life experience, and pay for players as young as 13.

However, we still require these families to volunteer (without pay) or pay the $25 opt-out fee.

WE ARE IN GREAT NEED OF THE FOLLOWING KINDS OF VOLUNTEERS (Coaches and League-level Volunteers of various types):

1) COACHING POSITIONS--Head Coaches, Co-coaches, and Assistant Coaches at all levels of House, grades 2-12, as well as Assistants at the Instructional level (grades K-1). We welcome teen coaches, ages 15 and up, in pairs, who have previous played for our league (or continue to play).

2) GENERAL ORGANIZATION/LEAGUE-LEVEL POSITIONS:
House League Directors—Needed for each House age group, from grades 2-12, for every fall/winter season.

Our Age Groups are currently defined as:

-
Boys 7-8, Boys 9, Boys 10, Boys 11, Boys 12, Boys 13 and Boys HS

-
Girls 7-8, Girls 9, Girls 10, Girls 11, Girls 12-13 and Girls HS
All of these positions have been filled as of 20 September '07.

Volunteers for these positions receive free registration for all family members for the current season.

New Positions Available this season:
- League Publicity Volunteers (work with our Community Relations Director, Richard Esposito)

- League Photos Scheduler/Coordinator (can be one or two people)

- League VBD Coordinator (can be one or two people)

- Parent Representative for Child’s School—Tasks to be defined in more detail early in the season. May involve attending PTA meetings and/or Back to School Nights (presenting Burke Basketball material), coordinating with office personnel, etc. We will need one parent for each school, which serves the Burke Basketball community.

3) GENERAL TEAM-LEVEL VOLUNTEERS:
The only team-level position that eliminates the $25 fee is:

Volunteer Building Directors (VBD)—By County regulation, we must have enough staff to ensure that there is a VBD in attendance at every game for each team. We recommend that each team have 2 VBD’s who attend games regularly, who can share the responsibility that one be present at every game.

Can be a parent or older teen sibling. VBD’s must watch the County training video, print the test from the County website and mail it to the County, to receive their VBD badge and information package.

Burke Basketball will assist with the training process as much as possible. The VBD badge is valid for 2 years, with the expiration date printed on the badge.

Team Coaches are always looking for assistance from parents for various internal team positions: Team Parents, Scorekeepers, Timekeepers, etc.

Please volunteer to help out your coach and team in these ways as well!

These types of jobs will be rewarded in other ways.

Teen Coaches particularly may need help from parents in terms of parent-to-parent communication, emailing, making phone calls, etc.!

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO ARE WILLING TO OFFER YOUR TIME AND TALENTS TO OUR ORGANIZATION AND YOUR COMMUNITY!
