The Burke Basketball referee program is designed for community players who have excelled in our program and desire a more managed and adult approach to the game of basketball.

Each year our organization trains referees to officiate games for the winter season. We would like those interested to register so that we can contact you in the near future for upcoming events related to the referee program.

Please keep in mind this program is very demanding as it requires a very mature personality. Young referees may find themselves having to deal with coaches acting in a 'non-professional' manner. When possible, a young referee will be teamed with an adult during the training period.

Attending the training sessions is mandatory as noted below. Please note that Burke Basketball will do its best to assign games to all candidates that complete the training but there are occasionally more prospective applicants each season than there are available games.

When possible, Burke Basketball will employ the expertise of Cardinal certified referees.

Fall/Winter 2009/10 Training Schedule

We will be having a two part series Basketball Officials' Clinics for all candidates 13 years old and over interested in becoming Burke Basketball Officials.

Required participants need to show up:

Saturday November 7th - Oak View ES Cafeteria: 3:00PM to 6:00PM

This will be a mandatory classroom rules clinic for all officials.

All non-Cardinal certified officials who plan to work with Burke Basketball.

Saturday November 14th - Oakview ES Gym:

CANCELLED - Due to an unfortunate set of circumstances, the 14 November Referee session at OakView gym from 9-12 was cancelled.

We will be rescheduling this training session as soon as possible, either for an evening or a weekend session. Date/Time of the next session depends on the availability of the gym.

Watch your email for information about the rescheduled session and who will be required to attend.

This will be a mandatory on-court clinic for all new officials with 0 years of experience.
Non-Cardinal referees with 1 year of experience are required to attend for the 1st hour of the clinic. Non-Cardinal officials with 2-3 years experience are invited to attend.

Bring the following:

  • Your own water bottle for refreshments
  • Whistle - Burke Basketball requires the use of "Fox40" whistles. Fox40 whistles can be found at Burke Sporting Goods.
  • Running shoes

You must have registered on our referee web site to attend. See the information below on how to register correctly.

Upon arrival, please make sure you sign in to receive credit for attending.

Officiating Basketball is an excellent way for both parents and young adults to contribute to Burke Basketball, as well as get a greater appreciation for the game.

If you cannot make either of these sessions due to a pre-existing conflict, please inform one of the Referee Coordinators within 48 hours prior to the event.

Coordinators - Randy Haswell and Robert Burnard will be conducting the clinics on behalf of Burke Basketball.

If you have any questions regarding the clinics, go to our Contact page for their email address.
